No-Drill Mount (Adhesive Mount)

What Is a No-Drill Mount?

No-drill mounts use industrial-strength adhesive — typically 3M VHB (Very High Bond) tape or branded Command strips — to attach door/window sensors, motion sensors, and sometimes keypads to surfaces without screws, anchors, or holes. The adhesive creates a bond strong enough to hold the sensor in place through normal door and window use, while being removable (with some effort) without damaging the surface.

How Strong Is the Adhesive?

3M VHB tape (the industry standard for security sensors) bonds at approximately 45 lbs per square inch on smooth surfaces. A typical door/window sensor weighs 1-2 oz. The adhesive is many times stronger than required for the application.

Removal requires sliding a piece of dental floss or fishing line behind the strip while pulling the sensor forward. Done correctly, this removes the sensor without damaging paint or drywall. Done incorrectly (yanking the sensor straight off), it can pull paint.

Security deposit risk: Most standard leases prohibit “physical modifications to the unit.” Adhesive mounts that leave adhesive residue or pull paint could technically fall under this prohibition. In practice, most landlords would not pursue a security deposit deduction for a 1cm adhesive residue mark. But if your lease is strict, see our landlord permission letter template for language that clarifies the mounting method upfront.

Which Systems Use No-Drill Mounts

  • Abode Iota: Adhesive-mounted door/window sensors standard. The Iota gateway itself can be placed on a surface without mounting.
  • Ring Alarm (8-piece): Contact sensors use 3M adhesive mounting tape included in the box.
  • SimpliSafe: All Gen 3 sensors include adhesive mounting — the drill-hole option is available but not required.
  • Wyze: All sensors use adhesive mounting only.

What Cannot Be Adhesive-Mounted

  • Outdoor cameras designed for permanent fixed mounting (Ring Spotlight Cam Wired, Reolink PoE cameras) cannot be adhesive-mounted without compromising the camera angle and weather seal.
  • Keypads in most systems can be placed on a surface (not wall-mounted) — check your system manual.
  • Sirens that require exterior mounting usually need screws.
